How to pray the Examen
God’s presence
I find a quiet place, become still and realize that I am entering God’s presence: “You search me and know me.”
Experience gratitude
I recall one or two events from the past day in which God was present to me in a special way. I am not looking for quantity; I pause with each event and bring it to mind as if it were present again. I thank God for what I was able to experience with him.
Ask for light
I ask the Holy Spirit for light so that I can look at my life through God’s eyes, as he sees it. I ask to recognize him in the past day and discover how he has been at work within me. I also ask him to make my mistakes clear to me, and that it may be his gaze that reveals my shortcomings.
Become aware
I go systematically through the whole day, hour by hour, looking for God’s presence throughout it. I do not go into detail, but look at four or five main events of the day. What was my inner attitude during them? What led me to act as I did? How did these events affect me? The central choice for a Christian is not between good and evil, but between something good and something better. It is our duty always to discern and choose what is better — this is the meaning of the Ignatian MAGIS. Where did my heart sing and dance; where did it experience growth in life, hope and love? And where, by contrast, did life, love and hope fade within me?
Ask for forgiveness
From the depths of my heart, I ask the Lord’s forgiveness for what I failed to do well — for forgetting his presence and closing myself to his love.
Look towards tomorrow
Trusting that I am in God’s hands, I ask the Lord for the grace to follow him better and a little more attentively tomorrow. I also ask to put right whatever separates me from him. To conclude, I quietly pray the Our Father.
